Video 1: Creating Your Video Sales Letter

Welcome to Module 4 where you’re going to learn how to create your very own video sales letter.

Assuming you’ve completed Modules 1-3, this is going to be pretty simple because a video sales letter is basically a much shorter version of a webinar.

Now with that being said, creating an effective VSL that converts is actually much more difficult than a webinar.

Why? Attention…

Specifically, the lack thereof.

Webinar attendees are a fairly captive audience. They’ve registered to attend, scheduled it in their day, and took the time to show up with the expectation of spending 90 minutes with you.

People who see your VSL have made none of those micro-commitments. Most likely they have clicked on one of your ads while bored and surfing the web, and have now landed on your VSL page.

Which means you now have about 5 seconds to grab their attention and keep it.

It’s a challenge that requires mastery of this skill, but should you dedicate yourself to that mastery, you will never, ever have to worry about money again.

So when it comes to writing your VSL, there are dozens of structures and formulas you can follow. Keeping these in mind when you’re stuck or have writer’s block, have really helped me stay focused on what’s important, and what my script needs to accomplish.

PAS:

Problem – Present the problem your prospect feels
Agitation – Poke at that problem until it’s visceral
Solution – Present your solution to the agitated problem

AIDA:

Attention – Jar the reader out of their boring ol’ lives
Interest – Engage their mind with unusual, counter-intuitive or fresh info
Desire – Engage their heart so they want what you’re offering
Action – Ask them to take the next step

The 12-Step Formula:

  1. Get attention
  2. Identify the problem
  3. Provide the solution
  4. Present your credentials
  5. Show the benefits
  6. Give social proof
  7. Make your offer
  8. Inject scarcity
  9. Give a guarantee
  10. Call to action
  11. Give a warning
  12. Close with a reminder
 

Now as for this lesson here today, I’m going to really break this process down into the most detail possible, so we’ll be using my personal 25-part formula, but we’ll get into that in a bit.

Next, I want to make sure you that you’re thinking like a professional marketer, and the biggest difference between someone who understands marketing, and someone who doesn’t is knowing what your prospect REALLY wants below the surface…

As you start to brainstorm ideas for your script, I want you to ask yourself these questions, as the answers will supply you with the most important parts of your presentation…

Who are my customers?

What are their demographics? Age? Sex?

What do they really want?

More money: Why do they want more money? More money gives them a feeling of security, of pride, of respect, accomplishment, and freedom.

What happens if they don’t make more money?

They have to wake up everyday knowing that they’re limited… Limited in what they can do, what they can experience, what they can provide, and they must force themselves to live a life based on scarcity and fear… The fear that they might not be able to pay their bills, or put food on the table, or that they could lose their car, or be unable to buy Christmas presents for their children.

Freedom: Why do they want more freedom? They can avoid a job that is unsatisfying. The can do what they want, when they want. They can bring their dreams to life. They can control their time.

What happens if they don’t get more freedom?

They miss out on the things that matter most in life, because they have to work too much. They get bitter because another person has control over their time and their schedule. They lose the opportunity to live a life they can control and become a lifelong victim.

To prove they can: Why do they want to prove they can? They want to prove to themselves and to everyone who doubts them that they can do it. That they’re smart enough, and talented enough. They want to increase their sense of self-worth.

What happens if they can’t prove that they’re good enough?

They must admit to themselves that they aren’t. That they are a failure, that all of their doubters were right about them.

What are the biggest obstacles and challenges that stand between them and success?

A lack of experience, self doubt, a lack of training and knowledge, a lack of skills, self doubt, a lack of money, not enough time, indecision, etc

Paint the picture/timeline of where they are today, and where they want to end up. What does that look like?

What are the things they need to do to go from where they are, to where they want to be?

What knowledge/results can you give them right now in your presentation that can help them, and demonstrate your value?

By answering these questions and going a level beyond their initial answer, you get to the heart of what they truly want. And THAT is where the sale takes place.

So now that you understand how to get to their real WHY, let’s go over some basic guidelines when it comes to writing a VSL script…

1: When it comes to length, keep it as long as it needs to be, and not a sentence more.

A VSL can be as short as a 60 second commercial, or in the case of Porter Stansberry’s incredibly successful End of American sales video, an hour and 16 minutes.

You don’t want to focus on length. You want to focus on engagement.

Porter’s 76 minute VSL produced over $250,000,000 in sales because it engaged people’s emotions… Specifically fear of loss, discovery, hope, and greed.

2: Every sentence counts. Once you’ve written your first draft, go back and remove every sentence and word that isn’t completely necessary.

3: Take your time. It took me over three months to write and re-write my very first sales letter script for Magnetic Sponsoring, and Porter and his team wrote and edited the End of America letter for nearly a year before taking it live.

But it’s worth it because the truth of the matter, is that you are one sales presentation away from your first million dollars.

4. Open:

At this stage in your sales presentation, you have to grab hold of your reader’s attention, and the best way to do that, is to tell a story… Your story.

You will want to share your experience with the problem your product solves so you can relate to your audience who is having the same problem.

Be sure to twist the knife, pour salt on the wound and really get them to feel the pain and experience it in their mind.

Use this as an opportunity to build credibility and make your prospect feel you were just like them before you discovered the solution.

This is considered your opener, and is one of the most important parts of your copy after the headline and sub-headline.

Here’s an example of the Open that I used for the Magnetic Sponsoring sales letter, which produced over $25,000,000 in revenue…

A “feature” is what your product or service, “is like, has, or does”…

A “benefit”, is what your product or service “does for you”…

Feature: “The Magnetic Sponsoring ebook will teach you how to magnetically attract new distributors to you”

Benefit: “Which means you’ll be able to quickly grow your team, without having to bug your friends and family members…”

To transition features into benefits, you can use simple transition words like…
